Successful Failing
How One Multi-Millionaire
Failed His Way To Success.

Terry:
Hi, youre listening to Terry Telford from https://www.tradebit.com, and today were extremely lucky to have a copywriter extraordinaire named Dan Lok. Hes in Vancouver, Canada. Dan is currently so busy that hes not even accepting new clients. So, you can appreciate the time that he is taking to be with us to describe his business, exactly how he works, and pass on a lot of information as far as being a copywriter and what you can do to actually write your own copy; the formulas he uses and the secrets he has. Lets just dive right in. Id like to say thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us, Dan.

Dan:
Glad to be here, Terry.

Terry:
Thank you again. Dan, Ive got a bunch of questions for you, but before we dig in, lets talk about you first. How did you get started and how did the early days go?

Dan:
Sure, I moved from Hong Kong to North America years ago with no money, no connections and not a word of the English language on my lips. As you can tell from my thick accent, English is not my first language. I had to learn it from scratch. I started my first business when I was 16 years old with my friend. We mowed lawns for people in my neighborhood. The business went down in six months from lack of customers. On and off I would start a business and it would fail very quickly. I was in the vending machine business, multi-level marketing, and the retail business importing toys from Asia.

There was one point that I lost so much money in my business ventures that I had to borrow money from my friends and family just to survive. That was pretty bad. I got a job making minimum wage stocking cans on the shelves in a supermarket. Since I had no degree or formal education that was the only job I could get at that time.

Now at that time, like most people, I was reading all those self-help books, Terry I think youre familiar with them.

Terry:
Yup.

Dan:
I was listening to tapes, going to seminars; I was a junkie. I thought positively and thought to myself daily that I was rich and wealthy. Guess what Terry? I was still broke. I think some of our listeners can relate to that.

Now by the way Terry, forgive me for being very blunt in this interview. I dont mean to hurt anybodys feelings, but I probably will and I hope our listeners wont be offended by that. When it comes to business and marketing advice, I dont pull any punches. I dont take any prisoners. I dont sugarcoat stuff, I dont BS people; I tell it like it is. Thats exactly why Im not everybodys cup of tea; my clients either love me or hate me.

Sometimes Im just too tough on my clients. Sometimes they come up to me and ask me, Dan, what do you think of this idea? If I dont like it, and I think its not going to work, I just tell them point blank that it sucks and its not going to work. A lot of them dont like to hear that, especially when theyre paying me a lot of money. But, they put up with me because I make them money. Why else would a person pay a marketing guy a lot of money to yell at them and slap them around? Seriously, why else would anyone put up with a maniac like me? The only reason is because I make them a lot of dough.

Terry:
I think its worth it; I think its worth going home with a black eye.

Dan:
So anyway; sorry that I got off track there. So I was starting all these businesses and these ventures were going out of business faster than I could start them. It was pretty bad. One day it just dawned on me and I asked myself this question: Why are some businesses more successful than others? Terry, I bet you know somebody that can start any business and make it profitable. I look at myself and I know Im not stupid, I work hard, and I had the desire to succeed. What was I doing wrong? Whats the problem? Whats the key? Whats missing?

I kept asking myself these questions and boom I got it. I got the ultimate secret to business success, and here it is: I have never seen a company in trouble from having too much revenue. Just like a person can never have too much money, a company can never have too much revenue. The next question you might want to ask me, Terry, is how do you create this revenue?

Terry:
That was right on the tip of my tongue.

Dan:
Yes. Well, you do that by creating and keeping a customer. How do you create and keep a customer? Through effective marketing. No marketing means no customers; no customers means no sales; no sales means no business. Show me a profitable company and Ill show you a good marketing company. Does that make sense to you, Terry?

Terry:
Yup, absolutely.

Dan:
So I discovered thats the ultimate secret for business success. Thats the key. Then, I determined to get good at this marketing stuff so I read all the marketing classics by Claude Hopkins and John Caples, and started my one-man advertising agency. I wrote ads for entrepreneurs and at that time, since I was just starting out, and I didnt have any degree or diploma in marketing, I didnt have any credibility. Nobody trusted me.

Terry:
How long ago was this?

Dan:
This was about six years ago.

Terry:
So about 1998.

Dan:
Yup. So what I did was very simple. I made them an offer they could not refuse. So, what I said to them was, I realize you might not believe in my marketing ability, and I understand that, so let me write an ad for you. If it doesnt make you money, then dont pay me a dime. Only pay me if it works for you. How does that sound? Well guess what they said? Sure, when can we start?

Terry:
Absolutely. You really put your butt on the line.

Dan:
Absolutely. So, I had to figure out a way to make the best advertising possible. Why? Because if my stuff doesnt work, I dont eat. I cant mess around with theories; I didnt have the luxuries I wish I had. They have to make money off the stuff I create, and preferably they have to make money very quickly.

Terry:
Yup.

Dan:
To this date, I have sold about $20,000,000 in products and services in over 39 different industries. Now, Im teaching others how to market their products and services. So, thats basically my story and how I got started in business.
